The Chauvet Cave, along with Lascaux, is one of the major prehistoric caves of France.
Protected to prevent degradation of cave paintings, Chauvet Cave is the subject of a project to create a restored area identical to the original cave over an area of more than 3000 m².
It will also contain a discovery centre, an educational space, restaurant and events area.
In addition, the authorities have applied for UNESCO World Heritage Site status, a project to be introduced in early 2012 by the French state.
